American Star Thistle - centaurea americana

C. americana is a pretty annual that grows 5 to 6 feet high. It bears large flowers, 4-5 inches across, in white, pink or purple.

I got seeds in a seed swap last fall for this wonderful plant, and what a treat to see these blooms. I did not know if they would grow down here in our hot and steamy climate, but they did. I started the seeds in the fall and this was my reward come May.

This is also called Basket Flower and it's obvious why.

The actual flower is the plant's highest fulfilment,

and are not
here exclusively for herbaria,

county floras and plant
geography:

they are here first of all for delight.

Oh my! That one is a real American beauty! I'll have to see if it is deer resistant. I just love it! Thanks for sharing the info/photos. Cameron

Cameron ~ If this flower is deer proof, it would make a lovely addition to your already beautiful gardens. FlowerLady

Thank you Iowa gardening woman.
I'm an amateur photographer, some come out, others don't.

I delete quite a few, and probably should delete more photos than I do, especially when I'm trying to get the critters.

I have the yellow blooming variety of the centauria. I think yours may not grow in my zone 5b. I'll have to check that out. It sure is lovely, and more delicate, or feminine looking than the "yellow fluff" as my DS and DIL call it.
