Why

Hello Folks ~ Why? ~ Why I love flowers and gardening. ~ Peace, communion with God my Creator, scents, being around birds, bees, butterflies, great exercise. My dear husband came up with my online name of 'FlowerLady' when we got our first computers around 1999. He said he always knew where to find me, out among the flowers, and it was/is who I am. I'm not a great gardener, no plan, my style is tropical, cottage garden.

There is so much to enjoy in God's creation, all we have to do is slow down, look around, look into, listen, take deep slow breaths. In my last post I mentioned eliminating stress from our lives as much as possible, and it is something I had to do recently. My little part-time job was stressful, not good for me mentally, spiritually or physically. Not that the work was hard, it wasn't, but the stress, which I won't go into, was just becoming too much. The money was a good help to supplement my small ss check, but not worth the stress I was under. So I quit almost 2 weeks ago. God will provide something else. I do still have a little bit of work for someone else and that's a help. I have begun to relax and to put the past behind and am enjoying each day that God blesses me with.

So, this morning I headed out again to work in gardens, this time the front patio area. I was out there for 2 1/2 hours, in the chilly breezes, and it was just wonderful. I didn't get done what I had wanted to do, but I did make forward progress in the area. I recently bought 2 Don Juan climbing roses, the only red climbers I could find that will grow in my zone. HD had them. I want to put these in the front patio area against the white lattice on either side of my lady statue, which I can see from my chair at the computer. I'll see how that will work. I planted them in huge black plastic pots, not pretty but cheap from a local nursery. Pics will be coming soon I hope.

For now, I wanted to share more of 'why' I garden. 'Don Juan', a nice rose scent and beautiful color.

"Hugs-n-kisses' hibiscus late yesterday afternoon, and then again this morning.

Visiting birds as seen from inside, out of the scullery window late yesterday afternoon. They were having a great time and then they were gone.

Windchimes, which have been making sweet music the past few days.

'Double impatiens' blooms, so pretty and remind me of roses.

This is a beautiful book I saw on Amazon the other day, I ordered it and it is more beautiful in person. It came today and tears came as I read her intro and the first chapter. I took a pic of the cover, then just randomly opened the book for a pic inside, it is below .

Where are heart is, is definitely where our treasure is. In today's world it can be so easy to get caught up in all of the trappings that aren't good for us. I heard a great message Sunday and it was about all of the thoughts we have in a given day, and 'they' have come up with an estimate of around 35,000 a day, on average. What we think on can make or break us.

In the Passion Translation of the Bible we read some very encouraging words to help us in our daily walk, in Philippians 4:6-8 ~

"Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life,

then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will make the answers known to you through Jesus Christ.

So keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always."

Take time each day to 'think' about what's important. Think about our Great Creator, who is our Savior, our Friend, who loves each of us deeply and wants a relationship with us. He has promised to never leave us, He is always by our side. Sometimes we just need to be still, to listen for His voice, to contemplate that He is the Great I Am.

Love, hugs and prayers from 'FlowerLady'

I'm glad to hear that you walked away from the stress. Sometimes, although the extra money is nice, it's just not worth it if it causes stress in your life.
Those roses are so beautiful. A pleasant sight for me right now since it's very wintery here

This is a wonderful blog. The red roses are wonderful but everything else is great too. Wind chimes add some different dimension to a garden. I always enjoy hearing the word.

I'm glad to see that new plants are irresistible for someone else who already has a lot! I can just imagine those red climbers climbing. Your hibiscus reminds me... I think it was photos of hibiscus that stunned me the first time I visited your blog!

It is amusing to me that someone can attenpt to count, or even estimate the number of, our thoughts. What IS a thought, that one can set it apart from another thought? And other such questions occur to me. I know that we are told to take every one captive to Christ. Just *trying* to do that should keep me occupied in my mind *and* heart.

Thank you for a THANKFUL and beautiful post, Flower Lady!

I love gardening also and spend a lot of time outside in the Summer. Can't wait until all the snow is gone and be outside.
Your roses are beautiful. I will get a climbing red one this year.
We have to appreciate God's creations.

This is a beautiful post, FL. Thank you for those precious words from Philippians. Such wise counsel! You mentioned the stress you felt while working at that job -- I wonder if that also contributed a little to your lack of desire to post on the blog? Not that the two are directly connect ... but stress can really derail our brain, cause us to think on negatives, keep our minds from exploring and enjoying the wonderful. And the wonderful is what we want to blog about, right? I find this to be true for me. When I'm stressed, I hunker down inside myself, survival mode. And I stop communicating.
Glad to have you back. Your flowers - no wonder they draw you in and reduce your stress. Is there anything more peaceful than closing your eyes and leaning into the cup of a rose, anticipating the perfume to waft over your senses? It's very like a kiss.

I can totally understand why you want to spend so much time in your gardens. In the few short months we have gardening season here in IL, I spend as much time outdoors, tending to my plants and flowers as possible. It's definitely a stress reliever and so peaceful. I also understand leaving a job that is not good for you in every which way. I've had to do that myself. Blessings to you. xoxo

Flower Lady, there is something peaceful about that name. Sometimes we need to make choices that will be of benefit to us, even when others might think these don’t make sense.Giving ip your job is likely one of those decisions .I have had to make some choices as well, that some people would think are wrong, but I feel so good and relieved after having made them. Keep on sharing those gorgeous flowers.Have a wonderful day and rest of the weekend.

Sweet flowerlady, I loved seeing your pretty roses and flowers. Your garden must smell heavenly. Maybe you could sell little flower starts from your porch for some extra money. Or charge others to work in their gardens. I wish you so much joy. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Hello Lorraine! I think you made a wise decision leaving that stressful job. And, we know that when one door closes, another opens...
I have two Don Juan roses. They were the first roses we bought for our garden. the blooms are beautiful, the color is dramatic and their aroma is wonderful. The spot where they located doesn't have full sun, so the number of blooms is not high, but nevertheless, I enjoy having them, and never had any troubles related to pests or diseases.
All the Best to you, dear blogging friend!

We can have so much stress in our life without adding to it. I am sure
you have concern about income, but to try to work anywhere that is not
stress free at this time in your life is not healthy or mindful.
Have trust in the Lord and you will continue as well as you have for
these years without DH.
Your garden is an extension of yourself. It is beautiful paradise
that you have helped create. Enjoy.

Beautiful views from your sweet cottage garden. Don't you just love the tinkle of wind-chimes? Love your beautiful bird-bath and it looks like the birds really appreciate having this little oasis, too. A stressful job takes the joy out of life, for sure. So bad for your health and peace of mind. Thoughts really can affect the direction of life and so important to try to keep them focused on divine guidance and the virtues. It's not always easy, so thank you for the sweet inspiration. Sending hugs xo Karen

Oh Rainey, we are so much in tune with our thoughts as you express them in this post. I think I will buy myself the book you suggest. One you might like is my newest purchase, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr, his emphasis is on religious growth in our second half of life. Your photos of your red rose say so much without words.

Dear Lorraine, I'm so glad you wisely left a job that was hurting your health and well being. Just reading of the time you spent working in your patio area affirms how much that time spent outside restores your mental and physical health. The Don Juan rose was always in my childhood yard. I love your pretty bird bath! And I've written down the name of your lovely book. You've written a lot of wise thoughts to your readers in this post, sweet friend, thank you for sharing them with us.
