Actually, the stained glass piece is ...

not really stained glass, like we think of, but painted. The soldering makes the outlines, and then the glass is painted. We really like the details. Our friend was in the antiques business at one time, and he had this piece a long, long time. I don't know what this technique is called, but maybe a stained glass worker/creator will know.

We are enjoying it in the living room window.

Here are pictures showing it in more detail, so click on the pictures to see larger images.

This is actaully the original, very old, antique stained glass. Not made like the glass in pieces, and then put together w/ metal that most people see today. This is how they originally made it for churches in the 1300's-1600's time frame, with the hand-painted glass and then metal sautered around it. Very beautiful piece , big hug to you, Gina

Whatever that glass piece is called, I call it beautiful. Great finds you and hubby made the other day. Can't wait to see how you use them in your gardens.

The window is beautiful! How large is it? Many old church windows were made using actual colored glass along with paint to add details which would be difficult to depict using the glass alone. Louis Comfort Tiffany used very little paint on his masterpieces since he disliked the way the paint cut down on light transmission. He would often layer the art glass with different colors of glass to achieve shading and depth, but when it came to facial features and hands, even his artists had to add some painted details.

I am so happy this window has found such a good home!

I love this. I have a piece of stained glass hanging in my loft window. Bought it at a estate sale about 10 years ago.

Good to have Gina explain that to us. I have often wondered about the painted glass in church windows. Now I know to treasure it as centuries old.

Yes, I will add that the painting on glass is a very old tradition and actually more common that the use of colored glass pieces. The artist really are known for their styles. Your window looks like a very high quality work. You are lucky to have it.

A lovely piece--it reminds me of the beautiful windows in the church of my childhood.
