Greetings from Plum Cottage ~ Hope you here in the US have had a lovely holiday weekend. I puttered in garden spaces. Had a lovely lunch with BIL & SIL on Saturday. We went to a wonderful restaurant that's over 100 years old, on the intercoastal waterway. I had fish and chips along with a margarita. Brought half of the lunch home and had that for lunch yesterday. ;-)
Ok, here's where I need some help. My dear husband and I bought our mattress around 20 years ago, a Tempurpedic and it is NOT what it once was. I can't afford something like that now on my limited budget. I did get my stimulus check though so could use part of that, but out of that I also need to get new glasses.
I've been googling mattresses and oh my. Memory foam in a box, Beautyrest, Sealy Posturepedic, Serta, Tempurpedic (just to see what they have now), and many more. I have been noticing more pain in my hip, knee and shoulder, especially on my left side, back aches also and not sleeping as well as I should be like I used to. My SIL & BIL and I turned my mattress around Saturday, heavy monster, and I can really see the slope in the mattress. Yikes! When we turned the mattress from one end to the other, I had to take the cover off and that's when we saw that the mattress was truly breaking down. I haven't been thinking about that the past 8 years without my dear hubby, I've just been living each day as it comes, thankful for my many blessings. Now it's a big decision time and that's where I could use your input on your mattresses, good and bad.
It is mind-boggling to say the least. My bed size is a full. I'm 72 and a side sleeper. The mattress stores in the area do not have 'in the box' mattresses in the stores, you have to order them online, so I can't see what they are like. I am praying about it and want to make the right decision. This should be my last mattress.
So, thanks in advance for your help. I appreciate your taking the time to read and write your suggestions.
May you all have a great week. It's hard to believe it is June tomorrow. We need rain, it keeps being predicted, but nothing is happening here. I hand water and can use the sprinkler three days a week at certain times, Mon., Wed., and Sat. I pay for water so only water what is necessary, no grass being watered.
Love, hugs and prayers,
FlowerLady
P.S. I think I still want a memory foam mattress as they are great for seniors, but I'm open for suggestions.

Well, I hope you get some suggestions. We are thinking about replacing our mattress and as you say there are a million possibilities out there and how is a person to decide? I'd rather not get one with a pillowtop which is what we have now but you can't can't turn them since the pillowtop is of course just on top. All you can do is rotate them which is of some benefit but not much.
I'll be checking back to see if anyone has experience with new mattresses pro or con.
We purchased ours from original mattress factory in Tampa do not know if they have any locations in South Florida however the showroom had competitors mattresses cutout, many had foam almost to edge which wears out quickly. Theirs had springs to the edge and has proven to be comfortable. We chose the orthopedic queen which ran about $800. We previously had a high end sheets memory foam which sagged in less than 5 years. I hope this will help your search. I have enjoyed your blog and gardens God bless
We just ordered a new set and it will be here on Wednesday. We are getting it from Sams. It is a Serta Perfecter Sleeper. Never had one of them, so right now can't say much. When It comes will let you know.
Unfortunately mattresses are not what they once were. I recently replaced my full size mattress and from what I saw they seem all to be one sided with no ability to flip them. Avoid memory foam, they make you sweat and are uncomfortable. Personally, I prefer Sealy, and the new one is a hybrid of traditional mattress with a little memory foam but not much and it’s comfortable. Take your time looking though, don’t let anyone rush you.
I have also been shopping for a new mattress. I will be getting a smaller bed, as I have a queen now, I really like the memory foam. I have a thick memory foam pad on my current bed and like that. Will be giving my bed to my granddaughter, so I don’t mind getting a new one. Call me crazy, but I’m planning to go to a twin sized bed.
I can't be of much help. The mattress I have is horrible. Wade and I bought it maybe 14 years ago. It was a pillow top mattress, can't remember what brand, and it didn't take long for the top part of it to get indentations from where each of us laid on it.
My mattress is not the best anymore. I hear a lot about Helix mattresses from Minimal Mom. Course her vlog is sponsored by them sometimes. I'll pray that you get a good mattress for what you can afford. Looks as if that's a good prayer for a lot of us.
I would not get a memory foam mattress. I would get a regular mattress and a memory foam topper. That way, if some mishap occurs, you are looking at replacing only the topper. Don't get an overpriced topper. Just get a decent thickness. I will check and see what I got. Okay, I got two mattresses that are shipped in the box, from Amazon. One from Linenspa for my husband, a "hybrid" with a memory foam layer as part of it and he ruined it almost immediately. Then ruined the next. And the next. They can take no moisture whatsoever and he does not want the waterproof covers on it, as it interferes with the memory foam part and hurts him. He's 86. So I covered the latest one with waterproofing and have a 3-inch memory foam "topper" on it and he has gone through several of those. He runs very, very cold and likes that memory foam is hot. For me, I got this: Classic Brands Advantage Individually Wrapped Coils Innerspring 8-Inch Firm Mattress, Full. I like mine but mine is firm, extremely firm. I hope you get some good recommendations and also even if you don't buy from Amazon, look at the reviews on Amazon, especially the 1 and 2-star reviews (bad reviews). So Florida is having dry weather! Well, having lived in Destin about 50 years ago, and all along the Gulf Coast, I would be happy in one way but concerned!
We just bought a memory foam full size mattress from Walmart for $189.00.
It is 8 inch thick and just a nice as the Tempurpedic we bought 10 years
ago. It was just in the store, comes in a box with wheels and handle and
once you put it on the bed, then you cut open the plastic bag that has
it contained in box size. I really believe this is very good mattress for
the money. Should last for 10 years at least. Lynn
My husband and I had a high end (custom made from Verlo) typical coil mattress up until a couple of years ago and we hated it. Was too hard, so we had it taken back to the factory to make it softer. Still hated it. Then we tried a foam mattress topper and it didn't help. I was waking up with hip and back pain every morning. When our son moved out of state, he gave us his memory foam mattress with a foam topper. We love it. I haven't had any pain at all since sleeping on this. And they're cheaper than a spring mattress. The negatives - they do run a little hot, like a couple of people mentioned. And you can't flip it - only rotate it.
I've read that the hybrid mattresses - combination springs and foam - are really good.
Perhaps doing some Google searching will help you, too. Look at mattress reviews. Good luck!
Good morning, Lorraine! We replaced ours a few years ago. Bought a mattress set at The Original Mattress Factory. It's a very nice-looking bed, but too stiff for me. So we got a 2" memory foam mattress to put on top and that helped a lot. To deal with the heat issue, I have two THICK mattress pads on over it. I had 3, but I found the third one wasn't necessary. Personally, the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on was the cheap mattress set my mother-in-law had in her house years ago. I'm wondering if all this fancy stuff is even an improvement? Maybe a cheap set with a memory foam top would do the trick. Or you could try a memory foam top (with extra thick mattress pads) on your 20 yo set and see if it might fix the problem. Would be worth a try before buying something expensive. If you do check out TOMF store, you can try out the beds and they guarantee them. Sorry this is so long. Hope it helps! Have a lovely Friday!
Hi, Lorraine! Quick answer from my vantage point is that memory foam is not my friend. We slept (uncomfortably & felt trapped) on one for about a month in a rented cabin and couldn't wait to get home to our own airbed. It's a refurbished Sleep Number (we didn't get the number thingy). IT works fairly well but it does need pumping up every now and then which in turn helps with our aching backs. Kim's suggestion to get a basic cheap mattress set agrees very well with the suggestion from my physical therapist years ago. :) Hope this helps.

I sent you an email! xo
Hi Lorraine, similarly I too am very budget conscious, so I bought a budget innerspring mattress and separately bought a mid priced topper. It is a dilemma and a challenge.
Beautiful blog
