Next garden project & volunteers

Hello Folks ~ First of all, I pray that all of you in the path of this late winter mega-storm will be safe.

Thank you all again for your kind comments in the last blog post.

It's hard to believe the middle of April is almost here. Time goes so fast these days. My days are busy and that's a good thing really. Like I said in a recent post, I'm working on getting gardens under control before summer's heat and humidity get here.

This morning I went out with the overgrown caravan patio area in mind. The stand of palms really needed to be trimmed, flower pots and recliner needed to be taken care of, weeds needed to be pulled.

After a couple hours of work.

Patio on the left, still needs tweeking, on the right in a view into the secret garden.

Yesterday morning I thought about going to Home Depot for some potting soil, but decided against it since it was also Sr. citizen day at thrift stores and I knew if I went out I'd want to spend $. So, I stayed home, folded and put away two loads of clean laundry, changed sheets on the bed, then went out to hand water potted plants and little garden spaces.

I was feeling a tad 'down'. I felt like getting out of the house, but buying plants can be an addiction, especially at spring time, and honestly I can't really be doing that any ol' time I feel the urge. While outside with hose in hand, I noticed a couple of 'gifts'. On an old passion flower vine that I thought was completely dead, no blooms in a least a year, I saw new leaves. That is so exciting to me as this passion vine's flowers are one of the most beautiful blooms and the scent from them is heavenly. The vine is called 'Incense'. When it blooms, I'll be sure to share them with you. I would right now, but my desk top computer is awaiting a new fan. I'm in my laptop.

Then as I walked around, I noticed that the coral honeysuckle vine had a piece of it that had touched down into a flower pot and rooted. Yay!  I'd like to get this going along the front hedgerow.  Hummingbirds and butterflies love this.

Today as I was working by the caravan patio, I spied two shrimp plant volunteers. WOW! I am being blessed with free plants. :-)

I've lots more flowers to share, but this post is long enough and my stomach is starting to let me know it's supper time.

I am so thankful to God for His gifts of love to me. They let me know He cares about every little detail of our lives.

Garden goodies that come up unexpectedly are always a wonderful bonus, and will give you continuing delight. Here, we started our garden with totally bare dirt, put on top loads of new mix and compost, and it is starting to have some colour.

I love it when we are able to work in our gardens and when you see something that you thought was gone and see it alive again is just wonderful. Sending you Hugs.

Not sure how you manage to cope with the lushness in your garden, it must be an ongoing thing to keep it in control. I love the shrimp plant, I'm sure in the past somewhere I had one of those.

A garden that plants itself, now isn't that wonderful. You sure were busy out there. I would have been worn out after all that work

I have a Coral Honeysuckle at our NC farm. It has grown crazy big since we moved! It needs to be drastically trimmed back. Do you think I could transplant any of it to VA? If so, any advice on how to do that? :-)

I love 'volunteers' in my garden! Last year I had some forsythia that had rooted into a pot, so I stuck it on the other side of the property by the horses....you just reminded me of that, I wonder if it took? Happy Weekend, Lorraine!

You are an amazing gardener. I noticed today, the little red honeysuckle vine I rooted last year is blooming. I sure love this time of the years. The flowers are so pretty and everything looks so fresh and green.

It's almost as if God was telling you "here you go.....some plants from Me and Mother Nature!" Your patio looks wonderful. It is hard work, but doesn't it feel good to get your area spruced up? Wishing you good weather!

How wonderful to find the new sprouting plants.......a happy surprise. It is a lot of work, but so worth the good feeling of getting everything spruced up. Your patio space is lovely!

Happy Spring to you! You've had some good workouts in your garden. We've been working in our back acres trying to get a handle on our brush. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and that your Palm Sunday and Easter are special.

Hi Sweetie. I love this post. Instead of going out and looking for MORE, you stayed home and enjoyed the things you've already been given. Such a perfect lesson for we who love plants! Your garden looks wonderful.

Just beautiful Lorraine, I do love visiting your gardens!! I learn about a new flower, bush or tree each time. You have so many pretty things growing and your garden is so peaceful and like and oasis. I would want to be out there all the time.

Spring clean-up is a lot of work, but worth it. I noticed my forsythia are about ready to leaf. It's late this year due to the long cold winter. But I'm looking forward to the yellow flowers. I sure miss the areca palms that I had in Miami when I lived down there. Yours are very beautiful! Phil

I love discovering volunteers (lovely phrase), we call them self-seeders. I too am busy getting my garden into shape, the weather is pleasant and it’s now or never. Wonderful to be able to mess about in the soil and nourish one’s babies out there.

I understand your thrill at finding those 'free' plants. They are the best! I am have a similar thing happening this spring. We had a man come with a bobcat to clear away some brushy areas that had gotten completely out of hand. He said it would be cheaper to just do a clean sweep rather than trying to miss some plants so I decided to turn him loose.
Now I having fun seeing what has survived that drastic clearing and will have to wait for some to bloom before I know for sure what I have left.

So nice to get such a big area all tidied up and it looks like a wonderful, shady place to enjoy a little treat and cold drink on a hot day. Good idea to group the pots to save time watering, too. The plants probably like the company of each other :) Isn't it wonderful that you found so many little gifts from God just when you needed them the most. Wishing you a blessed Easter. Sending hugs xo Karen

Lorraine, you are so fortunate that you have working green thumb. Your yard looks amazing. I love the little spot you have carved out by your caravan. My volunteer plants (what there are of them) are starting to come back and I hope I don't wait too long to go to the nursery (as I seem to do each year). I want to plant some annuals for color this summer..Happy Easter..Judy

Oh, my goodness, what a happy post and story!! Your pictures of "before" look so much like some areas of my garden, that go on and on being "before" -- no wonder we get a little DOWN, when the work is neverending, but our energy and time (and money) are limited.

But then, we see how life is also neverending!! The volunteers and survivors that God showed you on just the right day, when you needed the encouragement, are just wonderful. Eve better than if He had dropped down a few $. :-) Thank you, LORD!!!

A blessed Easter, Lorraine!

I know what you mean by having days when you just feel down :( I have them often. Too many family troubles. It's hard to just "pick yourself up," and it's so tempting to do something (like shopping) to distract the mind. Taking a stroll through one's gardens is SO much better! Just this morning i realized that my hydrangea bushes have sent out little baby bushes - as you say, free shrubs!! That's exciting. They don't bloom well, but at least they are reproducing!
