Plum Cottage Happenings

Good morning Folks ~ Earlier this morning a nice rain woke me up, some thunder in the distance. The rain was a blessing, more is predicted off and on throughout this week, which will be great for the gardens.

Thanks for thoughts and prayers for me with dealing with plantar fasciitis and for your love, encouragement and friendship.

Let’s see here, last week or the week before maybe, I printed something with my new printer and there were fine vertical lines in my printing. NOT GOOD. I did several things, didn’t fix the problem then I did an alignment and that did the trick.  What a relief that was! Then my mouse has been acting weird for quite some time, when I would click on something it would open several, or do other weird things. Something nudged me to go get a new mouse, and that also did the trick for that problem.

I had a nice outing with my dear sis-in-law Sue this past Sat. Went to A & B Flea Market in Stuart, and walked to the shoe booth, which was really close to the entry. Yay for me and my feet. She was really bummed out because they did NOT have much compared to times in the past when she’s bought from them.  The lady said they didn’t have the same supplier as in the past. I did buy two pair, some creamy beige sandals for wearing out, a pair of cranberry mules also for wearing out.  They did not have a walking shoe in my size. Sue suggested we stop at Dillard’s on the way to her house because they did have a store that carried them. We walked into Dillard’s, some place I’ve never been too before, I’m a flea market, thrift store, yard sale girl, and right off I was taken by these gorgeous Tommy Bahama shirts. I ooohed and aaahed then GASPED when I read the price tag, $118 EACH. I’ll keep shopping the thrift stores.

Anyway, the shoe place did have some Vionics walking shoes, and the salesman showed us ones that just went on sale, marked a third off normal price.  I tried them on and decided to buy them. (This was using more gift $, which is dwindling, but at least I have it.) The color of these shoes is perfect for working in Plum Cottage gardens don’t you think?  Sue told me she had a pair of Vionic sandals at home that were too small for her and might fit me. We checked them when we got to her place, and although, they are ‘not’ my style with all of the bling stones, they work well for my ‘home’ shoes. I have to say though, the bling is kind of growing on me.

vionics-collage

The shoes are so dang comfortable. Although, I am having to get used to them, and other areas of are sore from being realigned by the great arch support. I can tell a difference though in how my feet feel.  I am also doing exercises for the plantar fasciitis, and massaging in essential oils into me feet also.

Next, last week I ‘lost’ my regualr eyeglasses in their case. The last place I wore them and switched them out for my sunglasses was at my little ladies group meeting/luncheon. I got in touch with ladies and they are no where to be found. I thought ok, I’ve been proscratinating long enough on going for new glasses, so yesterday morning I went for one. Well, I ordered new glasses, and found out I have pressure of 26 in my left eye, normal is 10-21. The dr. lady there referred me to a specialist for more thorough testing. I took her card, paid my bill and left.  Glasses will be ready sometime next week.

I came home, ate some lunch then started Goggleing about natural and holistic ways of taking care of glaucoma and that’s what I’m going to do. I read that the drops from drs. have side effects, well duh, a chemical in your eye is not going to? I read about change in diet, more leafy greens, carrots and other ‘good for your eyes’ veggies. Also about vitamins and herbs and exercises for eyes too.  A young man who had just finished his training and was learning the office routine at the optical place, told me to drink carrot juice and to add some cinnamon too. I thanked him and told him I was all for natural ways for healing, and he said he was too. The dr. who examined me did not tell me any exercises, or anything else about how to take care of this. No.o.o.o. it’s send me off to a ‘specialist’ that will charge me out the ying-yang, and my simple Medicare does not cover eye drs. So, today starts my new regime/routine for eyecare and a healthier life.

I read that stress can be a factor, and since losing my dear husband 3 1/2 years ago, I certainly have been under stress. Plus I’ve plopped my fanny down in front of the computer more and way too much, to fill the void that his leaving this earthly planet has caused in my life. I’ve not been out gardening as much, so that’s lack of exercising. I read that gardening is good exercise for this. Smile I saw online that you should at least take a 5 minute break away from your computer every hour that you are in front of it.

So, keep me in your prayers as I start on this next part of my journey.

I really like your new shoes. Those cranberry mules are so cute! I'm glad you're planning to take better care of your eyes. I need to do the same thing. I spend way too much time staring at my computer. I definitely need to start taking breaks!

I can't believe all the beautiful blooms you have in your garden! What a wonderful variety!

Any eye problems can be scary but I remember a few years ago the doctor said my eye pressure was up. Then he asked me to sit back and relax and not tense up and then to relax as much as possible when he tested it again and do you know it actually was normal again! I have a habit of holding my breath when I'm tense and I think I was doing it then.

I love your shoes and need to look for them. I wear orthotics but hate ugly shoes!

You have been a busy busy lady, Rainey! I'm glad you got yourself some new shoes and there is Nothing wrong with Bling :) I'm sure you will enjoy having your new glasses. I'll be praying as you make your changes, I know how much of a challenge that can be. Blessings, Cindy xo

Your gardenias are luscious! I don't like the humidity of FL but it surely does make it possible to grow some fascinating plants.
Glad you found suitable shoes. I have to be careful what I put on my feet due to a bunion--ugh! It does seem as though the aging process brings problems we never imagined.
I'm all for dealing with health issues as non-invasively as possible.

Hi FlowerLady,

Sounds like you had a great outing with your SIL (love those cute mules!).
So sorry to hear about your medical challenges. Philip has been on glaucoma drops for years. I wasn’t aware there were home remedies for that disease ~ I’ll check them out today. Please make sure you have your eyes checked again in the future though, just to make sure you’re on track. 

You certainly can’t tell by all those blooms that you haven’t been in the garden much. Just beautiful. And I think gardening is a wonderful exercise and most definitely helps with stress (stress is an absolute health destroyer). So is sitting behind a computer – which I do for 8 hours a day at my office (and it shows). Oh the challenges of life! 

I really hope you post often about this next journey in your life as I’d like to follow along. I also need to make some changes.

Have a wonderful week. Love and hugs.

Your bloom pictures are always lovely! I don't grow many roses, just several, and like to admire yours. Take care of yourself, Lorraine!

You're flowers are just beautiful, Rainey! When it comes to medical things, I've discovered that most things can be taken care of if you figure out the root problem, such as nutrition. As a recovering shoeaholic, any day that is a shoe shopping day is a wonderful day. Ha!

Looking forward to hearing more of your new journey in your new shoes! By the way, I love the bling! And you've reminded me I need a pedicure desperately before I can be seen in sandals!

Beautiful flowers! I'm glad you got the eye problem worked out for now! Too bad about the glasses, maybe they will show up and you will have extra for next time you lose them. It was fun viewing your shoes! Andrea

I love your new shoes. I have foot problems too so have to buy more expensive supportive, comfortable shoes. Maybe next time I will try the kind you got! God bless you with your new healthy lifestyle. Have a good week.

Your flowers are gorgeous. Love the shoes and the blingy flipflops. So sorry you lost your glasses and sorry you have 26 on the glaucoma score. My mom had this too and also watching sugar intake helps as well. Eating lots of carrots does really work. I know you are on the right track to correcting this without meds if you can. Take good care and I hope the plantar fasciitis gets better too.
Blessings xo

What great shoes! Happy for you, Lorraine. I'd better get serious about the carrots. It would help fill me up, too - and maybe I could take off some of the extra poundage I've accumulated!

Gardening is already on your radar - so keep it up - and keep those photos coming. Your flowers are SO beautiful.♥

Glad you are finding some comfortable shoes. It is a nice change to find someone in the medical arena that will even talk about natural medicines. I noticed my new Indian rheumatologist said nothing negative about my taking turmeric capsules twice daily. That method comes from his native land.

Best wishes from me for controlling both your health problems. I hope your new glasses did not cost what mine did! I almost fainted.

Great shoes Lorraine...I hope they do the trick.

Your blooms are all gorgeous, and I love that tiny 'Mozart' rose.

Blogger has been acting weird for me as of late. Sometimes people's posts don't show up until the day after they posted, as this one of yours did. I hate when they make changes...things always start messing up for me.

We got blessed with rain too! Much needed. _Janice

Almost a year ago I developed plantar fasciitis, and it is just now easing up, after I made sure that *all* of my shoes were supportive; I never go barefoot, even in the night to the bathroom. I also have been stretching my foot a lot, etc.

It's a tricky thing, balancing all these health issues. When your foot hurts it definitely tends to decrease your time exercising, and that affects your mood, and so on and so on. :-(

I pray your eyes improve with that relaxing you are doing. God bless you!

Glad the Vionics are working for you. I can't wear any other kind of sandles now. Do search on line for a compression sock. They made the biggest difference for me. The one I wear has the toes open which is great because I can wear them around the house with sandles. They feel so good.

I was sorry to read about your glaucoma FlowerLady. My dad suffers from glaucoma, I know it's not fun. I really do belief in holistic and natural healing. It has it's place. Not everything needs big-pharma chemicals. I hope you are able to find some relief naturally. I also think the amount of time that we as a society spend staring at the computer screen is very bad and probably a factor.

The flowers are all looking beautiful, I love to look at them. I hope you have a good day FlowerLady, take care :-)

$118 for a shirt, huh? I don't think ANY shirt would be worth that price! I'm with you - I'll keep shopping at thrift stores (or clearance at places like Kohls). So sorry to hear that you've been diagnosed with glaucoma. Oh, you know a doctor isn't going to tell you about natural ways of dealing with something - they wouldn't make any money! Most of them don't know ways of natural healing anyway. All they're taught in med school is how to treat diseases with drugs. Love your new shoes, especially the mules and the sneakers with the purple.

Well, I've had cataract surgery in both eyes and retinal surgery to correct a bulging membrane in one eye. The other eye has it too but is not affecting my vision. I've had too many surgeries in the past year or two and I want some time to recover.

Those eye drops DO cause other issues and one of the important ones that is used to prevent infection after surgery is $114 for a bitty bottle. One of the most annoying problems I've had is that my eyelashes are all funny now. They don't curl up like they used to and they have thinned out a lot. I've tried using the eyelash curler and it doesn't seem to help much. The other problem that I have with eyedrops is that they go through the tear duct into the back of the throat, I know because I can "taste" them. They made my throat sore and I had acid reflux that went away, a short period after I was through using the drops. I hope you can treat your glaucoma holistically. I've been doing a lot of reading about the benefits of using "food as medicine". If you can get blueberries, they are very good for the eyes. Also avocado, which I know you have better access to there in Florida than we do here in Oklahoma. There is even some information on the internet about the avocado pit being edible and how it is full of antioxidants. The most important thing is being able to keep that pressure down in the eye, that is what does the damage and it is not reversible. Sending prayers and good thoughts your way. Hugs xoxoxo

Rainey, I'm glad you're taking charge of your health. You know I believe in whatever natural measures we can take, and so I'm praying your new diet and exercise plans lead to a healthier you! Your flowers are so gorgeous. They always are. Keep enjoying them. By the way, I LOVE the bling sandals. They look adorable on your pretty feet. Hugs, Nancy

Rainey, love your new shoes, I'm not much of a bling gal either, but then they do grow on you after awhile, lol. I'm sorry you lost your glasses, oh, I'd be lost without mine, legally blind here. Sorry to hear about the eye pressure, too. There's always something, I know how that goes. I hope and pray you have positive results with your new regimen. Plantar fasciitis is nasty, I've had many bouts of it, especially when my thyroid wasn't optimally managed. The one shoe that helped me were Birkenstock clogs; pricey, but the footbeds are replaceable and they are nearly indestructible. I've had one pair for over ten years. Sending all the best, love and hugs. Karen

YOU are always in my prayers Lorraine! :) I was so interested in reading some of the best ways to take care of our eyes. Thank you for that.
Wow...are your roses gorgeous! I lost so many bushes this past winter and some are having to start all the way back from the root, but luckily some survived and so I will have roses this year. I have never had so much winter rose damage before but it was a cold one here!
sending love sweetheart...

Hi Rainey
Catching up with what is going on with you. Beautiful flowers!. I LOVE Spiderwort. I don't see mine yet this year. Last year we collected a lot of it from the roadside and fields. I think mine blooms more toward July.

I hope the holistic treatment works for your Glaucoma. I have a cataract in my left eye forming that is driving me crazy. Probably a good thing so I am forced to pay better attention to the supplemental insurance I choose when I go on Medicare in October.

We don't have Dillards in Northern Indiana. I remember going to one in Tennessee when I was 16. As I recall it was out of our price range then. I LOVE BLING...love it. Our thrift stores are basically Good Will. Not sure if you have them there. Someone new must be pricing their items because I visited last week with my daughter and was shocked at prices. Simple Walmart used sandles were $5+. Shorts for my grandson were $15 and not even a name brand.

I used to wear those beach flip flops a lot, but since my sciatic issues they cause me to trip when it flares up. I have been wearing moccasins but admit I am pretty snobby about them. I love Minnetonka and have had good luck finding them at reasonable prices on Ebay.

Take good care.

Rainey, your name stays on my personal prayer list and I understand about death and stress. The summer is better for me...am able to get outside, stay outside and do physical labor. I go to doctors about every other year...any more often and they find things that "aren't normal". What that means is...age means changes and seems like docs aren't all that familiar with an aging body, changes and especially holistic health. I would LOVE to find a doc who wasn't a slave to the AMA and big pharm companies!
A friend had pains in her side, went to e.r., they admitted her to hospital and, next day, they took out her appendix. They COULD have treated her with antibiotics but chose the more expensive AND more invasive route. Their reasoning..."you're in good shape, can handle the operation and recovery and it might re-occur." Note...it might also NOT re-occur but then they couldn't bill her insurance company. Yes, I have a bad attitude. lol

Hi, I live in a small town named Covington, Tennessee- about 40 miles north of Memphis.I came across your blog from another blog that I follow. I am not a blogger myself but I have a few that I frequent. I just want to say we think a lot alike! I too shop thrift stores and yard sales to find bargains. I was just like you in Dillard's one day while shopping with my daughter. I chuckled at your expression when you looked at their price tags because I did the same thing!! Here in our area we have a Goodwill store, and although their prices are a little high, they're nothing like retail store prices. Thanks for sharing your life with us!!!

I've read that those Vionics shoes are wonderful for feet. I hope they do make you feel better. Having sore feet is so awful -- I limp around all the time. No fun! And it sure slows you down.
