What’s For Breakfast?

Good morning Folks ~ I’ve been on a sabatical of sorts from blogging. I will be back posting shortly about life here at ‘Plum Cottage’.

This post though, is about breakfast. Breakfast is a very important meal of the day. It gets us going and can keep us going for quite some time.

I love to cook, have since Home Ec. classes in jr. high school many moons ago. I have over 300 cookbooks, collected through the years, mostly from flea markets and yard sales.

Here is my latest cookbook, ‘America’s Best Breakfasts ~ Favorite Local Recipes from Coast to Coast’, by Lee Brian Schrager and Adeena Sussman.

This book is filled with wonderful photos of delicious looking and sounding recipes from around the country.  There is some history also and interesting tidbits about the recipes. There are 68 recipes and I’ve picked out 14 that jumped out at me to try:

Coconut Pancakes, Bacon-Egg & Cheese “Paco”, Southwestern Skillet, Blueberry & Cheese Danish, Bacon-Cheddar-Potato Pancakes, Baked Oatmeal, Cheesy Biscuits & Vegetable Gravy, and Fruit Tart “Pop-tarts”, and six more.

The recpes are easy to undestand and the photos are enough to make your mouth start watering and your stomach to start rumbling.

If you’d like to make your breakfasts more interesting and a reason to celebrate the gift of each new day, then you will enjoy this cookbook.

I chose this book to review and it was given to me for this purpose by Blogging for Books.

Happy 4th of July!

Be back soon, hopefully ~ FlowerLady

Breakfast is my very favorite meal - I LOVE to eat breakfast out somewhere where a real cook prepares it. Sounds yummy!

Hi Lorraine, I completely agree with you that breakfast is a very important meal and try to never skip it, since this is affecting my energy level negatively. I try to eat something healthy every morning. Have fun trying out the breakfast recipes from the book!
Warm regards,
Christina

Good morning!! I used to make breakfast every morning when the kids were little. Even after Laurie moved out, she and Kyle would show up looking for breakfast. Now we have settled into a routine of Terry eating shredded wheat and I eat a bagel. If Corey is around for breakfast he usually wants french toast. Let us know how you liked the recipes you chose.
xx, Carol

I just finished my breakfast in bed, a custom that my late beloved and I did after the kids left home! I love cookbooks, too, Lorraine, and enjoy reading them like novels. I used to be a Home Ec teacher before having our four children.
Thank you for your sweet visit and kind words. My hubby and I were married for 43 years, like you and your beloved. One day we will be reunited with our dear hearts. Love and blessings, Kitty

Breakfast is such a fun meal to prepare! I love inviting folks for brunch... so much more relaxed than other meals! I too love cookbooks and have new and many old ones in my collection.. I sell also sell them and am always on the lookout for the odd ball type, they often sell the best! The recipes sound interesting ... anything with coconut, blueberries, cream cheese or potatoes is a winner in my book!

Sigh (for breakfast)!

Alas, I am living the Fast-5 lifestyle which means 19 hours of fasting & a window of 5 hours for eating. My window "opens" around 1:30-2:00 in the afternoon. So not the typical break-fast for me. Sometimes we do break fast with a traditional breakfast though....

300 cookbooks, huh? I'm still wrapping my brain around that one!

Hi dear FL, Breakfast is my favorite part of the day. We sometimes make it special, but not enough of the time! Those choices you made, made my mouth water! Looking forward to seeing what you enjoyed! A big hug and kiss from me to you, LVL and The Herbal Husband

Hi sweet friend!
I have heard of this cookbook before and you are so right in that breakfast is our most important meal of the day.
You will be missed, but those times away do us good, so enjoy it and we will be waiting right here for your return.

My post is up today that I shared you on, thought you would like to know.
Again I must say that I love your heart that I purchased from you and my mother loves hers as well.

You are loved~~

Hi There, Glad to see your post today... I was afraid that I had been missing you somehow through all of my busyness.... Hope you are doing okay....

I LOVE breakfast ---but these days, since I'm so conscious about my weight, I try to eat sensibly for breakfast... It would be easy to eat 1000 calories for breakfast... BUT--oh how delicious it would be... ha...

We do splurge once a week and make omelets --with all kinds of veggies/meats, etc. (whatever we have on hand)... SO delicious. The rest of the week, I eat Greek plain yogurt mixed with fruits (strawberries, blueberries, etc.)

Hugs,
Betsy

Have a great week ahead. xo

Oh yum! I think I started drooling after reading some of those recipe titles. Bacon-Cheddar-Potato Pancakes? Cheesy Biscuits and Gravy? Yes, yes, yes! I think I may have to purchase this book. The hubby and I don't eat big breakfasts, but we LOVE breakfast for dinner :-)

Hope you are having a great week FlowerLady!

Yum!! I always like to make a 'nice' breakfast on the weekends - it's such a treat. During the week, I have my smoothie every morning - my body craves it!

You know..... breakfast is not just "for breakfast". Hubs and I have "breakfast for supper" about once a week. Sometimes I make one big cheese and veggie omelet that we share. He loves pancakes, with an egg and sausage on the side. Lately, I've been making fruit pancake syrups instead of some of the jam I usually make. There is Nanking cherry syrup and blackberry syrup in the refrigerator at the moment. It's a nice change from store-bought pancake syrup, which is sometimes just corn syrup flavored and colored to fool us into feeling like it's maple. I love maple syrup but the real stuff is very expensive. Hubs' mother raised 12 children on pancake and waffle breakfasts with homemade syrup. She made a kind of a "cocoa gravy" that they all called "chocolate syrup" and something they called "milk syrup" that was the recipe without the cocoa. When my mother made pancakes to feed her five children, it was molasses or sorghum that she used. She grew up in Kansas where sorghum grew well and it was economical and easy to get. Now, many of the families that made sorghum have discontinued the practice because it has a kind of a strong flavor that some people don't like. Maybe it's even an "acquired taste", not sure. So it's hard to find in markets. Fruit-juice pancake syrup is made just like jam or jelly except you use half as much sugar and it's not cooked as long. It keeps well under refrigeration and could be canned. I prefer to can or freeze the juice and make the syrup in small batches in a saucepan as it's needed. Though I have to be careful how much sugar I consume, I can tolerate having a little drizzle of fruit syrup on my pancakes without turning on cravings for more.

I hope you're doing well and having a good week. Hugs xoxoxo

Sounds like a good cookbook! I love to cook, too and love my cookbooks. However, I've really been decluttering lately and just got rid of 8 more cookbooks. Hope you are doing well and enjoying your blog break.

No wonder I enjoy you so much.....my dear Sis is a collector of cookbook and reads them for pleasure like a novel. She is also a great cook and very adventurous with recipes.

I hope you post these recipes as you try them.

I am taking a sabbatical/break (I like your word better) for a while too.

It sounds like a great one Lorraine! Right up my alley. I love good ole home-town home-grown cooking! Over 300 cookbooks? wow, you must be a great cook my dear. I have about 4 and two recipe files full of my mom and grandmother's best recipes.
sending hugs your way...

I am so bad sometimes with making coffee my breakfast...not a good habit. Glad to see your post!

I like to read cookbooks just like a novel, from the first page to the last. I thought I had a lot of them but probably only 1/3 what you have.

Thank you so much for the comment you left for me with the info on our plant with purple flowers. We have a lot to learn as we have lots of trees and shrubs at the new house and it is a different climate that the house by the Bay so different things grow there than what we are familiar with.

howdy there Lorraine...."eclectic, boho, tropical" is what you said I think.......I think that describes us BOTH! we can be gypsies together. Thrift shops are the greatest places to find those skirts, I find them every time! I can never resist buying "just one more".....ha ha LOL
