No snow, but we do have ice!

Good morning folks ~ hope you are all keeping warm. Earlier this morning it was 30 feeling like it was 16, it's around 33 right now at almost 10 a.m. and still feels like it's 16. The wind is from the NW at 22 mph. It is bitterly cold outside and we are NOT used to this at all. The sky is gray and the sun in 'trying' to come out from behind clouds. DH saw the ice first, so I grabbed the camera, put on a scarf, hat and my heavy jacket and went out to take some pics. Not wonderful or spectacular, but we do have ice in s.e. FL. Some in the middle to northern part of the state, did get snow.

We did not stay outside very long at all. Inside our cottage it is 64 as we did not keep the radiant heat heater on during the night. We were snug as a couple of bugs on our tempurpedic mattress (which holds your body heat), under a couple of quilts.

I really didn't walk around to check out the plants as it is just too miserable being out there in the wind. The sun is shining in the window now, hurray. Here's a picture of sunshine on my workspace with threads and projects.

The next two pictures so ice in our bird bath.

This picture is of raindrops that turned to ice drops
on a screen that blew over in the back yard.

The next two pictures are of a puddle of water that also turned to ice. You can see the leaves stuck in it too. While we were standing in this area we kept hearing a clicking noise and it was ice drops on the ends of the palm leaves that were brushing up against the gutter.

From what I could tell of the few roses that I checked out they are doing fine. Some of the tropical plants may have burned leaves, I'll be able to tell more when I go out when it warms back up.

Have a nice day and be warm ~ FlowerLady

Wow. I'm sure this is a shock to you all and your plants. Stay warm. By the middle of next week it should be returning to normal. Even with our temperatures in the teens, I have a couple roses still trying to bloom. The birdbath has been frozen solid for two weeks.

Oh, I'm amazed at how long this cold snap is lasting for those of you down south. I worry about the citrus! Here's hoping it warms up soon (but gradually).

At least you do have some supplementary heat in your house. I am hoping everyone in Florida and Georgia and Texas and all points south do!

They have been showing pictures of ice covered oranges and grapefruits on the news. It just breaks my heart for those who depend on these crops for a living.

Glad you can be snug inside.

Oh Dear! Ice can be so treacherous! I wish you great balance... I should rather have snow any day to ice... I have fallen one too many times. Then you have to put out sand and what a mess and it is so hard to find without salt! Your ice photos on the other hand are lovely. What a beautiful bird bath. Hopefully it will pass soon. Keep warm. It is very similar here. It doesn't usually stay this cold for this long. I think it is supposed to warm up as the weekend nears!

Hope your garden hasn't suffered too terribly. Glad to hear your snug indoors. :)

same here....and we're just not used to it. i keep making grandson put socks on, you know we southerners run around barefoot all year! i haven't looked at too much..too cold to go out if i don't have to, but i see several glass pieces just exploded from the sudden extreme cold. too late to bring them in, they'll just shatter in the warmth now. had a very nice aged capodimonti large urn, must have absorbed water in the crazes, it's in about 100 pieces. i really liked that certain garden junk,it held lots of different things on the steps.
all camellias are now brown mush, probably all buds, too.

Beautiful pictures of the ice. I like your workspace. Which rose is that in your header?

Oh my! You have OUR weather down there! I hope your plants did not get damaged. I feel for all the snowbirds who flew south and ran into this! Hope it warms up soon!

Well this must be a bit of a shock to you--waking up to find ice in your tropical paradise. I hope your plants take it well. It would be a shame to lose such lovelies as you have in your garden. I also hope for your sake and that of the citrus industry that the cold snap ends soon. I can remember some of the bad ones that have hit your southern area and the damage it did to the crops and industry. Don't want to see that happen again. Be careful out there walking around. The ice can hang on in the shady places long after the other stuff has melted away.
Better yet, just stay tucked up and cozy in that warm bed of yours. Read a good book and have a nice hot cup of tea. Besides, isn't that what winter is for anyway? heheh

Weather has given us a new topic of conversation for longer than I wanted to feel cold. It was 22F here when I looked at 6 AM. The greenhouse was at 32.8. Everything looks okay. We put another heater out there. Tonight is supposed to be even colder. We had snow, despite being north of the areas in Florida that did.

As we crossed the River today, DH pointed out the motel that flooded during the '100 years flood' in 1994. He can remember the same area being flooded in 1948, yet building was allowed there in the '60s. Flooded buildings can be avoided by reviewing the history of an area, but we can't do much about cold except to prepare to keep tender plants and ourselves and the pets warm.

Here's to an early spring. We've had enough cold hours for the peach crop to bear well.

I think we've traded weather with you. We are having such a mild winter here it's strange. I hope it warms back up there and the plants all survive.

Hello,

Isn't it during times of cooler then normal temperatures that we really appreciate living in warm climates? I hope your temperatures warm soon. The photos of the ice are beautiful though...

Wow that is so cold for you guys. We also have experienced the cold for extended periods of time. It's been freezing for 2 weeks now. I'll be glad to see and feel the warmer temps next week.

Hi All ~ It has warmed back up. We didn't have to walk on any ice as it was just little puddles and the bird bath that froze, nothing on the ground. I would hate to have to deal with walking on ice.

Leaves did fall off some plants, but others came through that long cold spell just fine.

Now that it has warmed up a bit, I need to get out to play in the gardens again.

Have a great weekend everyone.
